RSC - Advancing the Chemical Sciences

Introduction

Why are we focussing our 'Fuelling the Future' campaign on transport?

  • Fast moving cars on motorway at night time
There is no coherent government approach to transport and climate change. The government is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 60% by 2050, but also proposes massive airport expansions: the lack of consistent policy needs to be addressed.

  • Transport energy consumption is growing. There has been a 70% rise in the energy used for transport in the UK since 1980. This is much larger than the growth seen in other areas.

  • Transport contributes significantly to climate change. Transport now accounts for around a quarter of all carbon dioxide emissions in the UK.

  • We can choose how we travel. In everyday life, we travel; we may take the bus to town, drive to work, or fly away for a weekend break. These activities all cause varying amounts of greenhouse gases to be released into the atmosphere. By being a clear source of information on the impact of transport, we hope to enable the public to make informed decisions and take practical steps to reduce their emissions in everyday life.

  • Transport is fun: 'Fuelling the Future: Transport' will use public interest in state of the art cars, planes and trains to demonstrate the key role of the chemical sciences in an exciting way.
